And when the clock strikes 12, tell me where you gonna be?
Cleaning up the mess we’ve made or watching your TV?
-Billy Talent, Turn Your Back
The 2025 Athletics Canada Track and Field Championships will be the second edition held since the start of Israel’s mass murder campaign against Palestinians in Gaza. Genocide is a politically charged word, but numerous UN experts and human rights groups (Amnesty, HRW, B’Tselem) have written reports with extensive evidence that conclude genocide is the crime that Israel is committing. Canada continues to provide political cover for these humanitarian atrocities. We are also still shipping military goods to Israel.
To the athletes competing at the championships we ask, is a country deserving of representation if it provides material and political support to a country that is committing genocide? If you win your event, are you still going to celebrate with the Canadian flag knowing that the country behind that flag is enabling genocide?
What line does Canada have to cross to stop deserving representation from national athletes?
- Canada has a foreign policy that supports US-led international dominance, not peace.
- Canada was founded through the displacement and murder of Indigenous populations, a campaign that continues today through government agencies that force corporate resource extraction projects like pipelines through Indigenous territories.
- Canada does not even guarantee the basic needs of its own citizens. Many people are forced to endure homelessness on a day-to-day basis.
The three points above, even in isolation, are red lines for people who support human rights. Canada is guilty of all three. Promoting nationalism under these existing conditions helps Canada continue its problematic behaviour.
We urge all athletes to refrain from celebrating with the Canadian flag at this championship and reiterate our call to cover the flag on national uniforms for international competitions until Canada becomes a country that promotes international peace, fulfills the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and guarantees the basic needs of everyone living here. That’s the vision we have for a country that is deserving of athletic representation.
You can add your name to the Canadian Sport for Palestine petition HERE.
We’re always aiming to bring more people to feel compelled to take action on these issues. Dropping Billy T tracks while doing so is a bonus, but this is serious stuff. The best time to start going from watching your TV to cleaning up the mess is now.
Track Events
Decathlon / Heptathlon
Yeah, holy apology. Thought we could delay the decathlon writing until Thursday night but missed that it didn’t have one of those yellow “FINAL” boxes on the schedule. That’s because there is no final, they just bust out ten events. Friend of the show Max Speiser with my little eyeser got into one and hit up the silver medal spot after finishing fourth last year, but it was 2024 junior silver medalist Max Tucker who brought home the dub after a blistering 1500m to end it. Natty record for the kid. After nine events I would probably just want to take a nap on the couch with a box of cinnamon toast but this guy put a 4:17 on the board. 2023 champion Jared Hendricks-Polack brings home bronze.
For the women’s heptathlon it’s Sienna MacDonald coming in as the favourite after a couple years away from the podium. She won this event in 2022 but is looking to clean up this time which is going to be especially hard after she sends the sand flying by clearing a million meters in the long jump. Hannah Blair has been having a good season too and Rebecca Parker and Shelaine Pritchard could also factor in for the medals. Parker especially loves to take a tinder box out of her uniform and set the track on fire for the 800m you can’t start a fire without a spark and she knows how to provide one.
Racewalk
Yeah, 7 athletes have signed up to rip 50 laps around the track at 7 AM on Saturday. What a grind. On the men’s side we’re looking at a T Dub Wilson vs. Dmitry Babenko rematch from last year while on the women’s it’s gonna be Rosalie Drapeau looking to defend her title against Olivia Lundman. Let’s see what happens.
5000m
Well this one could be interesting folks with Moh Ahmed coming in as well as Olympian Thomas Fafard. Kieran Lumb is set to challenge in the 5000m this year and we are also seeing the return of Justyn Knight. Knight’s teammate, Kieran Tuntivate, is signed up too; are they looking to smoke an early breakaway? In the POURSUIVANTS group we’ll have guys like Nick Bannon, Mitch Ubene, Andrew Davies, Santiago Gaitan, and Thomas Laviolette laviolighting it up. Get the headlamps out the boys are mining for PBs out there tonight the conditions look good.
Yeah, Gabriela DeBues-Stafford is really back to top fitness this season she’s cranked out the Worlds entry standard in the 5k. Behind her Regan Yee is hanging on to the last quota position and Chloe Thomas could still get in the quota if she runs 15:16.5 and finishes second. Gracelyn Larkin and Erin Teschuk will challenge. So will Eleanor Baran who impressively placed third last year as somewhat of an unknown. How much of the pack will be left with two laps to go? Last year was an absolute barn burner of a race to watch make sure you LOAD UP on fire extinguishers.
Steeplechase
On the women’s side we’re gonna see Grace Featherstonagh try and shore up her quota position (sub 9:50 would be good) and then a chase pack for the medals with Mérédith Boyer, Emily Brown, Sophie Courville, Marine Garnier, and Sabrina Lavigne. A real battle with the barriers, let’s see who can hammer the hops.
Yeah, Jean Simon Desgagnés is having another good season out there just putting disco balls up above the track and getting his groove on. We might have had coureurs des bois in the 1600s but JSD is a coureur des BOYZ. Behind him there’s Aaron Ahl and Kevin Robertson + Kevin A Robertson who both train with Saint-Laurent Sélect. We’ll refer to them as Kevvy boi and Rob Dawg. For those who don’t know, Kevin A Robertson (Rob Dawg) is a bit taller and sometimes has longer hair.
100m
In the women’s event it’s gonna be Audrey Leduc against Sade McCreath. Audrey ripped apart the Canadian 100m record last year by taking out the boom box and blasting a 10.95, but then Sade put the same time on the board at the Bob Vigars Classic this year in London. Audrey waited a few weeks before taking out an even bigger boom box in Edmonton to move back into sole possession of the record at 10.94. McCreath ran 11.28 in that race, so we’ll see what kind of form she’s in this weekend. Jacqueline Madogo made the Olympic roster last year and could also challenge. Leduc won it last year ahead of Madogo and Marie-Éloïse Leclair.
For the men’s, Jerome Blake is looking ROCK SOLID lately someone might have to sculpt an Easter Island statue in his honour. He’s gone salsa mode and dipped under the 10 second barrier for the first time in his career. What kind of Andre DE GRASSE is gonna show up? Does Aaron Brown still have the wheels? Last year’s surprise silver medalist Eliezer Adjibi is going to challenge. He’s set a new PB this year of 10.02 and has one of the most chill auras out there the guy is an absolute freezer. Duan Asemota was fourth last year and could challenge for the medals. Brown and Adjibi still have outside shots to get into the world athletics quota if they can run in the low 10s and take the W.
Sprint Hurdles
For the women’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid is going MC Hammer mode, the hurdles can touch this. She’s got the world standard. Tatiana Aholou is having a pretty nasty season she’s got PB’s in the 60m, 100m, 60 hurdles, AND 100 hurdles this year and she really went baseball bat mode to make a massive dent for the 100 hurdles, Carrie-Underwood-Louisville-Slugger levels of force even. She’s right on the edge of the quota so will be looking for a good result.
For the men’s, friend of the show Craig Thorne got the better of Damian Warner in 2023 and guess what the ET still runs so it looks like they’re due for a rematch this year.
200m
Audrey Leduc holds the natty record but Madogo has a better SB this year. It seems like Leduc has been focusing on the 100 for competitions. How fast can Madogo go? Sunday afternoon showdown.
For the men’s race, Jerome Blake has the fastest season’s best at 20.10. THAT meets world championships auto qualifying standard criteria. DE GRASSE and Brown will have to go to town because they’re just inside the world championships quota right now. Last year Brown sent a heater to beat out Brendon Rodney, who has only raced one 200m so far this season. Adding Brendo Rods to the mix could make things interesting for the medals.
400m
Well Savannah Savannah bo banana Sutherland has been absolutely sending it out there this season in both the 400 flat and the version where you add silly objects that require hip mechanics mastery. Behind her there’s a big squad of Lauren Gale, Zoe Sherar, and Diana Proctor. Lauren’s in the quota; Zoe is just outside but a good result here could get her in. She took the dub last year.
For the men’s 4 hundo Chrissy Morales Williams got under the world athletics standard in Edmonton a couple weeks ago so you have to think he’s gonna be tuning the strings to rock it out there. Last year it was Michael Roth and Austin Cole for second and third and they’re back. We’ll see how much St. Thomas the Tank Engine track club energy Michael can bring this year.
Distance Hurdles
Savannah Sutherland is sticking to the pancake 400m this weekend which sets up a very exciting 4 hundo hurdles showdown between Jenna JAMES and Marie-Frédérique POULIN. Last year they finished 4th and 3rd, respectively. You just know it’s going to come down to whoever listens to more Nickelback Bruisers in the locker room before putting spikes to track.
For the men’s, Malik Metvier is looking to repeat but he’s only got one race in the legs this season which might make it tough to contend with guys like Ryder King, Ben Tilson, and Owen Babcock. Who’s going to go gazelle mode and execute the cleanest hops? We’ll find out Saturday at approximately 12:38 PM. WATCH IT.
800m
Yeah, Jazzy Bazookla is one more solid performance away from getting back in the quota after going sonic mode in Edmonton to take the win there and muck some huge world athletics points. LET’S GO (thumbs up). Aurora Rynda has an outside shot too but it’s gonna take a pretty exceptional effort and probably the dub. Last year is was Shukla, Rynda, and Townsend but some other challengers to the podium could be Emma Dagenais and Avery Pearson. It looks like French athlete and U Ottawa alum Maelis Trapeau is in the entries to make the race interesting but her result won’t count for the medals.
For the men’s 800 Marco Arop is gonna put the field On A Rope and dangle them off a cliff. Better watch out for second place though because the boys are gonna battle. Matti Erickson, Zakary Mama-Yari, Hassan Abdullahi; all these guys can go milk mode and absolutely truck it.
1500m
Yeah, dig into all of the music genres because this one is sure to be an absolute MASH UP. G and L Staff dawgs going up against Simone Plourde and Kate Current. ALL OF THEM ARE IN THE WORLD ATHLETICS QUOTA. Make sure you bring your industrial safety gloves if you’re heading to the stands to watch this one because it could get electric with the likes of Grace Featherstonaugh and Regan Yee in the chase pack too.
On the men’s side this one’s shaping up to be a real banger. Track legend Charles Philly is trying to hang on against the new kids on the block Foster Malleck and Max Davies. Kieran Lumb is in this too AND SO IS MARCO AROP JUST TO STIR IT UP. Behind them there’s still guys like Good Day Beaudet and Jonny Podracer. Wow.
Field Events
High Jump
Noel Vanderzee comes in with the best seed height of 2.22 but unfortunately that doesn’t require him to compete in two tu-tus. Would have been silly. Aiden (Air) Grout loves getting air he’s like an HVAC system out there. But the high jump is a tricky thing. Last year it was pride of Nova Scotia Joey Macdonald who managed to get up the highest for the win. Can he repeat? There’s also guys like Ashvin Balaramana and Thomas Becker who could challenge.
For the women’s, Margeurtie Lorenzo has won every edition since 2022 and is looking to continue that streak. This year she’s gonna have to go casino mode and DEAL with up-and-comers Tricia Madourie and Arienne Birch who were second and third in the junior division last year but who have set some big PB’s since then. This one will be interesting to watch.
Pole Vault
Over in the women’s pole vault Alysha Newman is going for yet another natties win but could be challenged this time around by Jen Elizarov who has been scorching performances this year like ovens at pizza convention. She’s improved her pb by 0.28m but will it be enough? Will my inventory of pancake mix be enough to hammer to cakes while watching cartoons tomorrow morning? We’ll see.
For the men’s compeition 2022 champion Nathan Filipek and 2024 champion Maxime Léveillé are both in it to win it. So is 2022 and 2024 silver medalist Deryk Theodore. He won this thing in 2019 and 2016 so this guy has been clearing bars like servers at closing time for quite a while. 2023 champion Nojah Parker is in it too. It’s might come down to who can keep their card the cleanest folks we’ll see whose packing enough soap in their shorts.
Long Jump
Yeah, Peace Omonzane has PB’ed by 0.17m this season and has been over 6.20m pretty consistently. She’s a big title threat and will be looking to improve on a fifth place finish from last season. Mikeisha Welcome will be looking to spoil that party and Hannah Haggerty and Celia Markovinovic are also having strong season. It’s just fun to watch athletes blast open the sand pit and send pellets flying out there it’s like beach edition cannonballs.
In the men’s Enter Sandman competition it’s Kenneth West and and Damian Warner who will be vying for the title you just know these guys are gonna be out there launching themselves off the board like 10m platform divers make sure you get your tickets to the hot tub after party.
Triple Jump
Over in the triple jump it’s gearing up to be an exciting challenge between 2022 champion Busola Akinduro and then Mikeisha Welcome who will be doing quad jumps this weekend between the long and triple competitions. Akinduro was second in the last two editions after taking the win so she’s looking to go hat mode and get back on top. What kind of hat is best? Bucket hats are solid. Idk if I can trust people who try to rock berets. ANYWAY…
In the men’s division we’ve got a cool rematch between Femi Akinduro and Daxx gonna give it to ya, he’s gonna give it to ya Turner. They were first and second last year but in this year’s edition we’ve got two more athletes who might go prairie tornado mode blow the barn doors of the competition WIDE OPEN I mean we’re gonna have chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, and cows oh my. Divine Aniamaka was the 2023 and 2024 junior champion in this event and went boulder mode to rock a 1.33m PB of 16.50 this season. Praise Aniamaka was a distant third last year but has the credentials to challenge for the win. He’s jumped 16.49. Is it gonna be the young gun Aniamakas or the vintage vets? This competition should be an entertaining one to look out for. Make sure you strap into your wind breaker.
Shot Put
Yeah, I don’t recommend this logging practice but the women’s event is pretty CLEAR CUT with 2023 World Championship silver medalist Sarah Mitton leading the charge. Behind her is Liv Sands and Efe Latham who are probably safe bets for the medals. It’s gonna take real mental strength here for these athletes because they’re basically just gonna be competing against themselves it’s like when you’re trying to convince yourself to get out of bed in the morning except in this case they’re throwing bowling balls out into a open field, sorry, “putting” bowling balls into an open field. Let’s go.
On the men’s side it’s a lot tighter we got a nice three-way battle for ya with Michael Ogbeiwi, Arthur (AJ) Stanat (also of St. Thomas the Tank Engine track club), and Anthony Labbe making craters out there apparently Athletics Canada has had to hire a specialty sod company to fix the divots they’re about to create it’s like golfing with a sledgehammer someone call up Peter Gabriel to take this one in.
Discus Throw
Over in the heavy frisbee contest Youseff KOUDSSI is looking for the FOUR PEAT PIZZA with extra onions. Holy cow that’s a lot of wins. Japanese athlete Masateru Yugami will give him a challenge for the outright W but as far as Canadian entries go nobody can zip the disc like Youseff.
For the women’s competition, we’ve got a one two buckle my shoe battle between Julia Tunks and Rachel Andres who were second and third in last year’s competition. Julia is in the world rankings quota this year and I can’t remember the last time there was a Canadian athlete that qualified for worlds in the discus. Someone should look into that. Rachel needs to put a big time UFO in the air out there if she’s going to challenge for the win.
Hammer Throw
Women’s Hammer throw Camryn Rogers is about to step into the circle and conduct yet another moon landing maybe this time we’ll figure out if it’s made of cheese or not. Jillian Weir is also in a World Athletics Quota position this year so she’ll be looking to launch a rocket of her own. LOOK OUT.
In the men’s competition it’s gonna be a classic case of jacked dudes with mustaches and flowing lettuce stepping into the ring to toss hammers out of the park they could throw the rest of your toolbox out too you asked them. Could be fun. Ethan Kats out of the bags berg leads the field followed by Rowan Hammerton and Jeremiah “No Big Deal eh?” Could you even imagine being as big of a deal as these guys? Would have get like 80 thousand uno decks to come close.
Javelin Throw
Well last year’s fourth place finisher Sára Enikő comes in with the best seed mark of 55.78 but last year’s FIFTH place finisher Pascale Dumont is looking to hit up the auction and make a bid for the win by tossing lengthy poles in a nice arcing fashion. Yeah, this competition is just an all out assault on the world of geometry who’s gonna GREASE the angles best? Don’t count out Denna Gibb.
On the men’s side Callan Saldutto is coming off an NCAA Championship performance where he managed to sling his stick 76.88 big ones for bronze. He was fifth last year and is primed to challenge for the dub. Behind him there’s Simon Fraser athlete Jarret Chong who has boomed an 8m PB this season. Last year’s fourth placer Charles-Édouard Hamon and seventh placer Erik Tyler will also challenge for the podium.
